| Strategies for effective traffic regulation in Udhampur | | | Early Times report UDHAMPUR, FEBRUARY 20 (INFO)- To work out strategies on streamlining traffic regulation, prohibition on entry of heavy vehicles in town, menace of overloading and congestion in Udhampur district, the District Development Commissioner, Udhampur, Mr. Ajay Khajuria convened a meeting of officers here today. SSP, Udhampur, SSP Traffic, Ramban, Addl. DC Udhampur and senior officers of civil and police administration were present in the meeting. Dwelling on traffic congestion by matadors and buses particularly at Slathia Chowk, Udhampur on Dhar road, it was decided in the meeting that henceforth all matadors and buses originating from Roun Domail, Dibber, Air Force Station, Manwal, Kaghote, Jaganoo, Johnu-Dalpad-Barta etc. would stop at the designated Bus stand and would start from there to their desired destinations without stopping at Slathia- Chowk except embarking and disembarking the passengers. Regarding the menace of overloading, it was unanimously decided to conduct awareness campaign of drivers and passengers about the risks involved in over-loading. The DDC directed the ARTO and Traffic Police to conduct frequent checking of passenger vehicles on the routes where apprehension of overloading is observed. It was also decided that entry of heavy vehicles in the town will not be allowed during day time, and measures will be taken to enforce this with the deployment of police personnel besides Traffic personnel at appropriate locations. Army authorities as well as para-military forces will also be informed to deploy their personnel in town to assist district police. The meeting also decided to form a Task Force comprising officers of Police and Municipal Council to continuously monitor illegal parking of Reharis in the busy areas of the town by making surprise checks and imposing fines including confiscation of such Reharis by Police. Measures to effectively implement regulation of one-way traffic restriction on heavy vehicles of all kinds coming from Srinagar via newly opened Udhampur NH Bye- Pass road were also discussed in detail. The authorities of Army, CRPF and BSF would also be informed to ensure that the vehicles coming from Valley side pass through that road and in no case should enter the city henceforth. Other issues discussed included parking slot for Taxis, Tata Sumos and issuance of more licenses in needy areas of the district. The SSP Traffic suggested for issuance of license by ARTO to only 6-tyre passenger vehicles for rural and hilly areas to lessen accidents. Possibility of locating alternate sites for the parking of vehicles including Taxis, Matadors and Auto Stand was also worked out in the meeting.
