| OMAR ON ROAD | | CM on first mass contact tour, says Panchayat polls on cards | | Early Times Report
Sunderbani, Feb 20: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today declared that the elections to the Panchayats in Jammu and Kashmir shall be held immediately after the Lok Sabhs elections which are expected to commence in next few weeks. In his first mass contact program after becoming the Chief Minister, Omar has embarked on a road journey of twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch. On the first leg of his tour, the Chief Minister addressed public gatherings at Sunderbani, Nowshera and Kalakote. “Omar is the first Chief Minister in about 10 years who has toured Poonch and Rajouri from Jammu by road”, said his official spokesman. Omar said that coalition partners in the Government have always nurtured harmony, brotherhood and secular traits. “Our politics is above regional considerations”, he added. Abdullah said the Government would carry forward its agenda of integrated and balanced development of every area. He said that he has preferred to visit Poonch and Rajouri districts by road to meet people, speak to them and hear them. The Chief Minister said the Government is committed to give justice to every citizen living across the State and provide a strong edifice for sustainable economy. He said progress on accelerated pace will be made the benchmark of governance and generation of jobs for youth, particularly in the field of self-employment and private sector, will be the top-most priority of the Government. Abdullah said the foundation of fast-trek infrastructure development laid down by former Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad with zest will not only be carried forward but multi-faceted development programme to reach every nook and corner of the State will be launched for economic growth and prosperity of the State. “We do not believe in hollow slogan making and false promises. We live in a world of reality and truthfulness is our politics”, Mr. Abdullah said. Referring to the Below Poverty Line (BPL) survey, the Chief Minister said that he has received various complaints against the survey and, as such, he would look into initiating the BPL survey afresh so that genuine beneficiaries are not left out of its ambit. Speaking about the tourism potential of the region, the Chief Minister said that he will ask the Tourism Department to take steps for showcasing and developing places of tourist interest in this area. Mian Altaf also spoke on the occasion and said the present Government will take all steps to make J&K realize its dream of a developed state. He said that Government would make all efforts to provide basic amenities to the people living in far-flung and backward areas and upgrade these wherever required. He said that Government is determined to ensure equitable development of all areas for which a comprehensive policy plan has been already kick-started. He thanked the people fore reposing faith in National Conference and said that the coalition Government would come up to the expectations of the people. He sought cooperation of public for success of the people-friendly policy planning of the Government. Mian Altaf also said that an integrated forest development project at a cost of Rs. 60 crore will be devised for Kalakote. MLA, Nowshera, Mr. R. S. Sharma and MLA, Kalakote, Mr. Rachhpal Singh, spoke on the occasion and highlighted the demands of their constituencies. They thanked the Chief Minister for visiting their areas and taking firsthand appraisal of the developmental demands of the people of these areas. MLA, Mrs. Bimla Luthra, Provincial President, NC, Mr. Ratan Lal Gupta and senior NC leaders, Mr. Ajay Sadhotra and Mr. Javed Rana also spoke on the occasion
