| Opposition critical of brief session | | |

Jammu, Feb 20: The Opposition has come with a sharp reaction to the government’s decision of having brief assembly session and presenting vote on account instead of full budget.
While state's largest opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party said the decision "undermines the legislature," Jammu and Kashmir Panther's party termed it a 'joke'. The first session of the coalition would be a brief with only 11-sittings after the cabinet which met under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Thursday decided to go for Vote-on-account. The ruling coalition is likely to hold full budget session in summer this year.
While experts believe that the coalition was left with no other choice given the financial crunch it is faced with, the opposition has reacted sharply to the curtailed session, which is the first of the ruling coalition and is being held after thirteen months.
General secretary of the PDP and MLA Bandipore, Nizam-ud-Din Bhat said that the government could have done better had they gone for full fledged budget session. "Government is feeling shy and is simply not in a position to face the mighty opposition. This decision does not render any democratic tradition and undermines the legislature," Bhat said.
Bhat, who defeated former 'renegade' turned politician Usman Majeed form Bandipore, said legislature is a credible platform for elected representatives to raise public issues and contribute in governance.
Legislature Party leader of National Panther Party Harshdev Singh and former education minister castigated the Government decision, saying it has played a "joke" with the legislators. "The decision has clarified that government is not bothered about problems of the people as it (assembly) is a viable place for legislators to highlight these problems," Harsdev Singh said.
Sources said that the state's finances picture stands dismal, with bills amounting to Rs 500 crore pending in the treasuries for release.
