| Sadhotra, Beig replaced as NC’s provincial heads, tipped to be MLCs | | Rattan new Jammu chief, Dar for Kashmir | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 20: In an important organizational decision, the National Conference has replaced its Provincial Presidents of both Kashmir and Jammu provinces with new faces. Ajay Sadhotra and Mehbooba Beig were the provincial presidents of NC for Jammu and Kashmir, respectively. Both had, however, lost the assembly elections. The decision comes up in run up to the upcoming elections for Legislative Council and sources have claimed that Sadhotra and Beig may get seats for the Upper House and later a role in the government. The National Conference President Farooq Abdullah has nominated Rattan Lal Gupta and Ali Mohammad Dar as new provincial presidents for Jammu and Kashmir with immediate effect. Sources said that while bringing out organizational changes the National Conference plans to offer key roles to Sadhotra in Beig in view of the challenges in areas they come from. It is expected that both may get to serve in the Omar Cabinet by entering the legislature via Legislative Assembly. Beig had contested assembly election from Anantnag but lost to PDP patron and former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. National Conference has almost been routed out from entire south Kashmir where Beig comes from and the party may give him some position in government in a bid to resurrect its base. Meanwhile, the National Conference executive and legislature is meeting here on February 23 to discuss the election of the Speaker of Legislative Assembly. The elections for the post of speaker Legislative Assembly are being held on February 25. Sources said that the legislative meeting of the National Conference is being held on 23 February in which the decision would be taken as to who would be the candidate for the post of speaker. However, if sources are to be believed the party has finalized the names of Muhammad Akbar Lone—MLA Sonawari, and Choudhary Muhammad Ramzan—MLA Handwara for the post. Following the state cabinet meeting Thursday and directives of Law and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry, the Assembly Secretariat issued a provisional calendar for first the session of the ruling coalition, starting 25 February. According to the calendar, election for the Speaker will be conducted at 0010 hours on the first day of the session. As a part of their power sharing agreement, the ruling NC-Congress have already agreed that the speaker for the assembly would be from the major partner. The state legislative assembly at present has a pro-tem Speaker, Choudhary Muhammad Aslam, from Congress. Office of the Speaker Lower House had fallen vacant due to the resignation by incumbent Chief Minister Tara Chand, on January 5.
