| 79 Colleges funded for making students competitive | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, FEB 21: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has released Rs. 50,000 for each of the 72 Government and seven private Government-aided colleges across the 22 districts of the State for helping them to set up career counselling centres and for purchase of books and periodicals for competitive examinations including KAS. The Chief Minister has approved funding of Rs. 39.50 lakh to provide students equal opportunity in all the districts to prepare for various professional examinations. Besides pooling in the resources in such a manner that all the requisite information is available under one umbrella, the counselling centres will also provide access to the latest books, referrals and periodical, enabling students to make a coordinated effort to prepare for the coming examinations. This move of the Chief Minister comes close on the heels of his earlier initiative of inking a pact with the J&K Bank to set up 1,109 IT centres as well as sanctioning 18 new polytechnics in the State. Mr. Abdullah from the very beginning has been striving to annihilate distances and create basic facilities for the students within their respective district headquarters so that they don't have to travel to the capital cities for preparation of competitive examinations. It has been the endeavour of the Chief Minister to provide equal opportunities to students from across the spectrum, especially those from the lower economic strata. Meanwhile, there has been an unprecedented response to the KAS 2009 with J&K Public Service Commission receiving record applications from aspirants seeking entry to the premier career of the State.
