| City cyber cafes safe for mischief | | | AMANDEEP SINGH Jammu, Feb 21: Though the Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police Kuldeep Khoda at a national seminar on security in Delhi called upon the Indian software giants to build appropriate software for security agencies so that cyber technology can be used as a tool for better investigation but despite the recent precedents of terrorists’ outfits all around the world making full use of internet to execute their aspirations the authorities in Jammu and Kashmir are yet to realize the importance of keeping a strict vigil on the cyber cafés in the city which can be a very easy medium for the terrorists to access a channel which can be easily exploited for spreading fear and panic anywhere in the world. After countless cases in the recent past, in which the utilization of the ‘www’ means by terrorist outfits very well exemplified the vulnerability of internet for terrorist activities, in almost all the major cities of the country a strict vigil is kept on the cyber cafés by maintaining a proper record of the visitors and by installing CCTV cameras in the cyber cafés as they are the easiest and safest mode to access the world wide web for such activities. In a visit of the early times team as routine customers to different cyber cafés in the city it was found that no proper record is maintained in any cyber cafés and even if there is a register to record the details of the visitors one can easily furnish fake details in them as the owner/In-charge at the cyber cafés hardly bother to counter check the details from any of your identity proofs. When inquired about the maintenance of the visitor’s record and installation of CCTV cameras in the premises they all admitted that they have been instructed by the Police department to take such measures but was followed by number of excuses for not properly executing the instructions. They said that most of the customers as such don’t carry their identity proof with them and at times especially the female customers hesitate providing their details like phone number and email id, whereas, installation of CCTV cameras seems to be a costly affair. SSP Jammu Manohar Singh when contacted on the issue affirmed that only such verbal instructions have been issue to the cyber café owners in the city but no such official notice have been issued because its not in the authority of the police department to issue such a notice but expressed his keenness on the issue and assured that strict action will be taken against the owner of the cyber café not observing the instructions. But the ground reality in the city remains that any person after creating a menace through the internet can easily escape escort free without leaving behind any trace mark but are the authorities in the state waiting for such an incident to actually happen that takes the city to the national news for it’s vulnerable cyber cafés?
