Pulwama terror attack changed J&K’s security landscape, political narrative

Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 14: Five years after the Pulwama terror attack, everything has changed everything, from the security scenario to the political narrative, in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
On the one hand, Pakistan was given a befitting reply after this terror attack by attacking terrorist camps in Balakote, on the other hand, all separatist leaders who used to enjoy VIP status were taken to task by putting the majority of them in jails and banning their outfits.
The terror attack had significant ramifications for the region of Jammu and Kashmir and India as a whole, leading to several changes in the security landscape, political dynamics, and societal sentiments.
In the aftermath of the Pulwama attack, there was a notable escalation in security measures in Jammu and Kashmir. The Government intensified counter-terrorism operations, increased troop deployment, and implemented stricter border controls to prevent infiltrations and curb terrorist activities. Security forces conducted numerous operations targeting terrorist hideouts and networks in the region.
One of the most significant developments following the Pulwama attack was the abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35-A of the Indian Constitution.
In August 2019, the BJP-led government revoked Article 370, effectively integrating the region more closely with the rest of the country.
Alongside the abrogation of Article 370, the Indian government also bifurcated the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two separate Union Territories – Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
This reorganization aimed to facilitate better governance, administrative efficiency, and development initiatives in the region.
Furthermore, separatist leaders who enjoyed VIP treatment during the successive regimes were cut to size. The majority of the separatist leaders were put in jail and their cases were reopened for fresh investigation.
Strike, hartal, and stone pelting became a history in Kashmir with tourism flourishing in different parts of the Union Territory.
