GDC Sidhra hosts awareness lecture

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 15: GDC Sidhra took a significant stride towards combating lymphatic filariasis (LF), commonly known as elephantiasis, by organizing an insightful Awareness Lecture. This initiative, aligned with the Government of India's target to eliminate LF by 2027, aimed to sensitize students about the genesis, causes, and preventive measures of this debilitating disease.
Under the auspices of the NSS unit of GDC Sidhra, in collaboration with IQAC and Viksit Bharat@2047, the Awareness Lecture played a pivotal role in advancing the critical strategy of Mass Drug Administration (MDA) against LF. Prof. Deepa Kak and Prof. Shonima Malhotra served as resource persons, enlightening students about the disease's transmission, primarily through the bite of Culex mosquitoes breeding in unsanitary water sources.
Students were apprised that LF often manifests later in life, causing irreversible damage to the lymphatic system and leading to visible deformities. The lecture underscored the imperative of preventive measures, emphasizing the significance of anti-filarial drugs in averting the onset of the disease.
Dr. B.B. Anand, the esteemed Principal of GDC Sidhra, provided able guidance for the program, reinforcing the institution's commitment to public health initiatives. The successful execution of the event was made possible through the active cooperation of Dr. Mehmood Ahmed, NSS Unit PO at GDC Sidhra.
The Awareness Lecture not only enhanced students' understanding of LF but also catalyzed efforts towards its eradication. By fostering awareness and promoting preventive measures, GDC Sidhra reaffirmed its dedication to contributing to the national goal of a healthier and filariasis-free India. Such initiatives epitomize the institution's ethos of serving the community and nurturing socially responsible individuals.
