| Recession hits militancy? | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 23: Though the graph of terrorists killed in operations launched by the security forces has registered a downward curve during the last five years, the rate is much higher than the elimination of security forces, including police, in Jammu and Kashmir. Official sources said that during the last five years 2332 militants were killed in the state against 640 security personnel who laid their lives while fighting terrorists. According to these sources, seven security personnel were killed against 13 militants, Asked to explain the reason for this positive change official sources said that marked drop in the level of ingress of militants from across the LOC had resulted induplication of man and machine power of militants. Besides growing political conflict and deteriorating security scenario in Pakistan had forced militants to be on the defensive. No doubt the Kashmir valley and some parts of the Jammu region were rocked by militancy related violence during the last 20 years, the security forces had enjoyed the upper while tackling gun toting youths. This is borne by the fact that between 1990 and February 2009 as many as 20870 militants were killed against 522o security personnel. As far as the surrender of militants is concerned 412 rebels laid down their weapons during the last three years when in 1995 and 1996 1156 militants had surrendered. During the last 14 months 38 militants have surrendered.
