Sopore continues to simmer

Srinagar: Curfew was today lifted from the restive township of Sopore but people continued to vent anger against the killing of two students, allegedly by counter insurgency 22 Rashtriya Rifles of army on Saturday evening.
Meanwhile, entire Sopore and its adjoining areas including main town Baramullla observed complete strike against the "cold blooded" killings.
"We lifted the curfew from entire town late last night," Assistant Superintendent of Police, BS Tuti said.
District administration Sunday imposed curfew in entire Sopore town of the north Kashmir's Baramulla district to prevent the situation from escalation.
Even if the there was no curfew in place today, there was to let down in the protest demonstrations either.
According to eyewitnesses hundreds of people took to streets at separate places including Chankipora, Batpora, Iqbal Market, Main Chowk, Mulsim Peer, Baba Yousuf and Mehraj and staged massive protests in demand for stern punishments to the killers.
Chanting anti-India slogans, the protesters also clashed with posse of police and Central Reserve police Force, deployed in strength in the entire area since the incident.
Sources said that police and CRPF burst scores of teargas canisters besides used batons to disperse the protesters, all day long. However, BS Tuti, the ASP Sopore, said that the situation in the entire town remained normal.
Reports from Baramulla said that protest were also held in Baramullah while the shops and other business establishments remained closed and traffic also remained off the road.
Reports said that hundreds of people poured onto the road at cement bridge Baramulla and clashed with police and CRPF. While police resorted to baton charges and fired teargas canisters to disperse the protesters, there was no report of any injury to any persons from either side.
District administration has already announced a magisterial probe into the incident.
According to the reports, on late Saturday evening, troops of 22 Rashtriya Rifles opened indiscriminate fire, allegedly without any provocation, on the pedestrians at Bomai Sopore killing two students, Muhammad Amin Tantray son of Muhammad Sabir and Javaid Ahmad son Muhammad Ismael on the spot while another student, an 8th grader, Firdous Ahmad Khawaja son of Abdul Gaffar was injured in the shootout and is battling for survival at a hospital here.
Meanwhile, sources said that army today handed over a person identified as Javaid Ahmad Zargar son of Bashir Ahmad alias Babloo, a former renegade, in connection with the incident. However, police and army maintained silence over the issue and refused to divulge details
