NEW DELHI, Feb 26: Lovely Professional University (LPU) marked a significant milestone in its academic journey with the grand celebration of its 11th annual convocation, held on Sunday, February 25, 2024. The distinguished event was graced by the presence of former Australian Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, who served as the chief guest for the occasion.
A highlight of the convocation was the conferment of an honorary doctorate, Honoris Causa, upon Tony Abbott, in recognition of his exemplary contributions to global leadership and statesmanship.
Amidst the jubilant atmosphere, Tony Abbott commended the remarkable achievements of LPU's graduating cohort, which included 102 gold medallists, 555 PhD scholars, and 567 meritorious students excelling in both academics and co-curricular activities. Notably, the convocation also marked the graduation of LPU's inaugural batch of 'Online Mode Students,' underscoring the university's commitment to providing accessible education across diverse platforms.
In his address, Tony Abbott lauded India's unparalleled potential as a beacon of peace, prosperity, and development on the global stage. Encouraging the graduating students to take pride in their Indian heritage, he urged them to leverage their education and skills to effect positive change in society.
Dr. Ashok Kumar Mittal, the Founder Chancellor of LPU, presided over the convocation ceremony and expressed his pleasure at welcoming Tony Abbott as the chief guest. Dr. Mittal highlighted the fruitful partnership between LPU and 16 prestigious Australian universities, underscoring the institution's commitment to fostering international collaboration in education.
Emphasizing the importance of research (Anusandhan) for shaping a brighter future, Dr. Mittal urged the graduating students to embrace innovation and inquiry in their academic and professional pursuits. He referenced the national slogan "Jai Anusandhan," championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as a rallying cry for scientific discovery and advancement.
The conferral of the honorary doctorate upon Tony Abbott adds to LPU's legacy of honoring distinguished leaders and luminaries from around the world. Past recipients of this prestigious recognition include esteemed figures such as Presidents, Prime Ministers, and Nobel Peace Prize laureates.
The convocation ceremony drew a distinguished gathering of guests, including prominent personalities such as Lovely Group Chairman Ramesh Mittal, Vice-Chairman Naresh Mittal, LPU's Vice-Chancellor Rashmi Mittal, Community Leader in Australia Jagvinder Singh Virk, Vice Chancellor of GNDU & former Secretary of UGC Dr. Jaspal Singh Sandhu, as well as esteemed industrialists and dignitaries.
