| Natrang presents Platinum Jubilee show of Dogri play ‘Bawa Jitto’ | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 24-Platinum Jubilee show of Natrang’s internationally acclaimed Dogri play ‘Bawa Jitto’ staged here today at Abhinav Theatre Jammu. Written by Prof. Ram Nath Shastri, the play has been creatively directed by Balwant Thakur. Prof Varun Sahini Vice Chancellor University of Jammu was the Chief Guest on the occasion who later felicitated the participating artists for creating a history in the theatre world. Bawa Jitto is the first theatre play of the Duggar-land which gave a new cultural identity to Jammu region and is now being considered as the cultural symbol of Dogras. Widely acclaimed as one of the most outstanding theatre production produced during the post India Independence period, the play has already been featured in over thirty National and International theatre festivals. Set in the rural backdrop, this 15th century Folk tale portrays the age-old saga of exploitation of landless farmers by landlords. Due to the constant and persistent pressures of relatives, with a piece of land as bone of contention, Bawa Jitto, a hard working, farm less farmer is forced to leave his native village. Accompanied by his nine-year-old daughter, he takes shelter in the house of a friend in Shamachak, a nearby village. The efforts of his friend Rullo result in a land grant from landlord in Shamachak and one fourth of the produce is fixed as land revenue. The hard work put in by him, the sweat and toil of Jitto turns a barren land into prolific treasure. This makes avaricious landlord to back out on his word and ask for major share of the crop. Helpless Jitto, unable to endure injustice, kills himself. The agony becomes boundless when Gauri, his little daughter immolates herself on her father's pyre. Director Balwant Thakur who has been conferred with the highest Indian honor in performing arts i.e, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for direction in theatre has used high of creativity and innovation in its design and direction. Arvind Anand who played role of Bawa Jitto excelled throughout the performance and demonstrated his hold over professional acting. He was equally supported by the professional actors of Natrang which included Suresh Kumar (Mehta Beer Singh) Anil Tickoo (Malli), Sanjeev Gupta (Isso), Renu Sharma (Jojan), Sat Salarbi (Rullo), Gauri Thakur (Bua Gauri) and Tajasvi Sharma (Jeauni). Others who were successful in their performance included Mohit Sharma, Pawan Verma, Gaurav Jamwal, Dimple Sharma, Rohit Verma, Pankush Verma, Prashant Sagar, Hemant Bholla, Ritesh Dogra, Kuldeep Gupta, Sheezan Hassan, Surbhi Sharma, Anita Dhar, Vansheen, and Durga Deep Singh. The lights were designed by Suraj Ganjoo and the show was coordinated by Sumeet Sharma.
