| First Lady asks women to play lead role | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, FEBRUARY 24 – First Lady Mrs. Usha Vohra has called upon womenfolk to come forward and strive for holding the reins of power by competing at all levels. The Lady Governor was speaking after inaugurating the five-day UGC-sponsored Sensitizing, Awareness and Motivation (SAM) Workshop, organized by Centre for Women Studies and PG Department of Home Science, Government College for Women, Parade here today. She said there is nothing that a woman can not achieve and urged them to gear up and sensitize themselves to achieve laurels in public life.
Mrs. Vohra said the notion of gender neutrality is an old one and called upon women to develop proactive attitude and fight for their basic rights. “You possess hidden talent that needs to be channelized in the right direction for showcasing it before every one. Rise to grab the opportunity with open mindset without bothering about the end result”. However, she added, there is an underprivileged class of women, which requires special attention and incentives. He asked UGC resource faculties for launching a massive awareness campaign for weeding out discrimination against women, which is still prevalent in our society. The Lady Governor favoured setting up of more women colleges in the State so that latest education is made available to them at their very doorsteps. She advised the faculty members for avoiding age-old traditions and said education should be imparted in free and student-friendly environment. Commissioner/Secretary, Higher Education, Mr. N. K. Verma, in his address, dwelt at length on the measures taken by the State Government for empowering women, adding that various colleges have been opened in the State for women where qualitative education is being imparted to them. He said the UGC has also established its postgraduate centres in different colleges of the State were education is provided to the students belonging to remote and far-flung areas
