| Ominous portents of gruesome murder of a family | | editorial | | The gruesome murder of a whole family of three members, along with their domestic servant and driver on the intervening night of 17-18 Sept, in the posh Trikuta Nagar colony of Jammu city, is entirely a new phenomenon and unhealthy development, which has ominous portents, for the city, rather the region as a whole, which in the past is known for absence of crimes of such nature. Of course, incidents of cross gun fires and even cold blooded murders resorted to by rival gangs of criminals against each other's members have been taking place occasionally in this part of the country and in the wake of terrorism many families have been eliminated altogether in the rural and far off areas of Jammu region, by the ultras. Similarly the gang war by contractors, sometime resulting in the killings on spot, is known here. But the elimination of all the members of a family, suspected to be the outcome of some business rivalry, is rarely known here. Similarly, the scourge of "supari (contract) killing, for which cosmopolitan cities like Mumbai and lately even Delhi are notorious so far had not infected Jammu, as has been widely suspected to be the modus operandi in the present case. Obviously the indications that the murder of the cement business baron Chopra and his two family members is the result of some business rivalry with the conspirators having engaged the professional contract killers to accomplish the task has the reason to ring alarm bells among the well to do citizens as well as the police force. That no break through in the heinous crime has been reached at by the police even after over 72 hours of the committing of the crime, while on one hand goes to give proof of the act committed meticulously by the expert killers, on the other hand casts reflection on the preparedness and competence of our policing, whose attention and energies are perhaps so over occupied against the terrorists, even at the cost of ignoring the normal policing to tackle crimes of other nature. The recovery of the Maruti Alto car of the victim, in which the culprits are suppose to have made good their escape from the house of Chopras after committing the crime, abandoned at populous kaleeth Nagar and lying there since the morning of Sept 18, as per the version of the shopkeepers of the area gives the clue that the culprits might have boarded the bus, from near by bus stand in the early hours of Sept 18, after leaving the car. This indicates that the contract killers might be hired from outside the state. However refuting of this version by the Hari market police post in charge, Sub inspector Basanti Bhat that the said car was not there till 18th late evening and might have been abandoned there late on that night further creates confusion as to where the culprits went after committing the offence and where they kept the car for the whole day. In any case the working of the case by the police at the earliest possible and apprehending the culprits is imperative to restore the confidence of the people at large in the law and order.
