| Omar invites ‘effective opposition’, ‘vigilant media’ to make his Govt responsive | | | Early Times Report Jammu, February 25 – Asserting that strong opposition and vigilant media were imperative for an effective and responsive Government, Chief Minister, Mr. Omar Abdullah has expressed hope that the first Session of the 11th Legislative Assembly would focus on discussing public interest issues in the best parliamentary practice and business rules. Making his first speech in the Legislative Assembly today while congratulating the Speaker, Mr. Abdullah said that Mr. Lone’s 6 year-term as Deputy Speaker has been exemplary and appreciated by one and all. He said Mr. Lone has won the hearts of the legislators by performing impartially as Deputy Speaker and he would render his valuable service as Speaker likewise. The Chief Minister said that there were various Members who are representing their constituencies in the House for the first time and as such deserve soft approach from the Presiding Officer, adding that while Speaker has to deliver justice to all parties, the Members were equally required to render their fullest cooperation to the Chair in the smooth conduct of legislative business. In the lighter vein, Chief Minister said that his party legislators when in opposition in the last Assembly, had a grievance that Mr. Lone as Deputy Speaker despite being from there party was not fully accommodating them in the House. I hope that this grievance will be from the legislators of ruling party this time and not from the opposition members, he said. Mr. Abdullah also expressed gratitude to the Speaker Pro-tem, Choudhary Mohammad Aslam for his excellent role in conducting the Assembly business during his short tenure.
