Jammu, Mar 7: Prime Minister Narendra Modi labeled Article 370 as the primary hindrance to the holistic development of Jammu and Kashmir, asserting that certain political dynasties in the region shamelessly exploited this provision for personal gains.
In his inaugural rally in Kashmir post the abrogation of Article 370, the Prime Minister highlighted the newfound freedom and upward trajectory of the Union Territory. “J&K is now breathing freely, thus reaching unprecedented heights,” he stated.
This marked Modi’s first visit to Kashmir following the annulment of Article 370 and Article 35-A, and the division of the former state into two Union territories—Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh—on August 5, 2019. He emphasized that the revocation of Article 370 has fostered respect for the talents of the youth and ensured equal rights and opportunities for all.
Specifically, the Prime Minister commended recent measures such as granting voting rights to refugees from Pakistan, the Valmiki community, and sanitation workers, as well as fulfilling the Valmiki community’s demand for Scheduled Caste (SC) status post-Article 370’s abrogation. Additionally, he highlighted the BJP government’s decision to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the Paddri tribe, Pahari ethnic group, Gadda Brahmin, and Koli community.
Addressing the issue of hereditary politics in the former state, Modi lamented its historical disenfranchisement of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) from reservation rights in Panchayats, Municipalities, and Municipal Corporations. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to providing equal opportunities to all segments of society, ensuring equitable representation and opportunities.

He expressed gratitude for the overwhelming turnout at the event, both in person and through virtual connections, underscoring the collective anticipation for a revitalized Jammu and Kashmir.
Reflecting on Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerji’s vision for a progressive Jammu and Kashmir, Modi reiterated his government’s resolve to overcome all obstacles and ensure every individual’s opportunity for growth and development.
He concluded by reaffirming his dedication to winning the hearts of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, pledging to continue his efforts towards their well-being and prosperity.
