In his inaugural rally in Kashmir post the abrogation of Article 370, the Prime Minister highlighted the newfound freedom and upward trajectory of the Union Territory. “J&K is now breathing freely, thus reaching unprecedented heights,” he stated.
This marked Modi’s first visit to Kashmir following the annulment of Article 370 and Article 35-A, and the division of the former state into two Union territories—Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh—on August 5, 2019. Specifically, the Prime Minister commended recent measures such as granting voting rights to refugees from Pakistan, the Valmiki community, and sanitation workers, as well as fulfilling the Valmiki community’s demand for Scheduled Caste (SC) status post-Article 370’s abrogation. Additionally, he highlighted the BJP government’s decision to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the Paddri tribe, Pahari ethnic group, Gadda Brahmin, and Koli community.
