| Prevention key to vulnerability reduction: Kotwal | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, FEBRUARY 26 - A sensitization programme aimed at generating awareness about disaster risk reduction in earthquake for the Corporators of Jammu Municipal Corporation was convened here today under the Urban Earthquake Vulnerability Reduction Programme of Government of India and United Nations Development Programme aims at. Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Dr. Pawan Kotwal was the chief guest on the occasion while Mayor, Jammu Municipal Corporation, Mr. Kavinder Gupta, Corporators, Commissioner Municipal Corporation and senior officers were also present. Dr. Kotwal in his address stressed on the need of generating mass awareness and chalking out a concrete action plan for facing the disasters. He said that prevention is the key to vulnerability reduction and right information about construction of seismic proof structures and implying retrofitting techniques in the existing structures can help minimize damages to life and property during earthquakes. He said that Corporators can help implement such programme with their accessibility to the common masses. He exhorted them to work in cooperation with the various agencies and NGOs to generate awareness among the common masses. Mayor, Mr. Kavinder Gupta also asked the Corporators to reach out at the grass roots level with this sensitization programme so that necessary action can be initiated to reduce disaster risk. Later, Dr. Kotwal also convened a meeting to discuss the construction of modern slaughter house in Jammu. Deputy Commissioner, Jammu, Dr. Mandeep K. Bhandari and other senior officials from Municipal Corporation, Police, JKPCC and SPCB were also present in the meeting. While discussing various issues such as site plan, mode of transportation of animals to these sites, maintenance of hygienic conditions at these places, he asked the concerned line departments to work in coordination on the project implementation
