NEW DELHI, Mar 9: In a momentous event held at Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh, on March 9th, 2024, the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, marked a historic milestone by laying the foundation stone for NHPC's ambitious 2880 MW Dibang Multipurpose Project. This groundbreaking ceremony was attended by esteemed dignitaries including Lt. Gen Kaiwalya Trivikram Parnaik, Hon'ble Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, Shri Pema Khandu, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, and Shri Chowna Mein, Hon'ble Deputy Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh. Situated near village Munli in Lower Dibang Valley District, Arunachal Pradesh, the Dibang Multipurpose Project boasts a monumental 278 m High Dam, slated to become India's highest Concrete Gravity Dam. Utilizing advanced Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) technique, this dam is poised to be the world's tallest RCC Dam, setting unprecedented engineering benchmarks. With a planned peak concrete placement exceeding 5 lakh cubic meters in a month, the project signifies a groundbreaking feat in construction technology.
Upon completion, the Dibang Multipurpose Project is projected to annually generate a staggering 11223 Million Units (MU) of hydropower, contributing significantly to the clean energy ecosystem and augmenting the Northern Grid. Scheduled for commissioning in February 2032, the project will witness a construction period of 108 months, providing direct employment opportunities to 500 individuals during construction and 300 during operation phases. Additionally, it is estimated to generate indirect employment for 5000 and 500 people during construction and operation phases, respectively.
Recognizing the socio-economic impact of the project, it pledges 12% Free Power allocation along with an additional 1% for the Local Area Development Fund, catalyzing state development endeavors. Furthermore, the project aligns with national and state objectives of achieving Net Zero targets, reinforcing India's commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
Designed as a storage project with flood moderation as a pivotal objective, the project will create a reservoir capacity of 1282.60 Million Cubic Meters (MCM) while ensuring flood control measures during monsoon seasons.
The laying of the foundation stone for the Dibang Multipurpose Hydroelectric Project signifies a monumental leap towards sustainable energy infrastructure, epitomizing India's dedication to pioneering engineering marvels and environmental stewardship.
