| House pays tribute to RV, VP Singh, Shah, others | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, FEBRUARY 26 – The Legislative Assembly today paid rich tributes to former President of India, Mr. R. Venkataraman, former Prime Minister, Mr. V. P. Singh, ex-Chief Minister of J&K, Mr. Ghulam Mohammad Shah, former MP, Mr. Tirath Ram Amla, former MLAs, Mr. Hiralal Hitaishi, Thakur Baldev Singh and Mr. Mohammad Maqbool Lone and former MLC, Mr. Bilal Lodhi, who have passed away since the last Assembly session. The Obituary Reference began with the Speaker, Mr. Mohammad Akbar Lone paying rich tributes to the departed leaders soon after the House assembled at 10. a.m. Mr. Lone said their contribution towards strengthening of democratic institutions has been enormous and would be remembered for their valuable contribution in the political and social spheres. The Speaker said that Mr. Venkataraman by virtue of his calibre and hard work rose to the highest office of the country. Mr. Venkataraman, the Speaker said, has remained minister in the State Cabinet of Tamil Nadu as well as of the Union Government. After holding the portfolio of Defence in the Union Cabinet, Mr. Venkataraman became the Vice President of India in August 1984 and was later elected President of the country on July 25, 1987. Remembering the contribution of former Prime Minister, Mr. V. P. Singh, the Speaker said he has been a staunch supporter of secularism and socialism who always worked for welfare of the poor and the backward sections of society. Born at Allahabad in 1931, Mr. Singh remained Chief Minister of UP from 1980 to 1982. After remaining Union Finance and Defence Minister, Mr. Singh became the Prime Minister of the country in 1989. He passed away on November 27, 2008. The Speaker also paid rich tributes to former Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Mohammad Shah and said that his role in making Jammu and Kashmir a progressive State will be long remembered. He said that Mr. Shah was born on July 2, 1920 at Srinagar and did his degree in law from Aligarh Muslim University and studied in London School of Economics on UN scholarship. After a distinguished political career, Mr. Shah rose to become the Chief Minister of J&K on July 2, 1984. He passed away on January 6, 2009. Mr. Lone lauded the role of former Parliamentarian, Mr. T. R. Amla and former legislators Mr. Hira Lal Hitaishi, Thakur Baldev Singh and Mr. Mohammad Maqbool Lone and said that the late leaders worked tirelessly for the upliftment of people and upholding the democratic and secular values. On the request of some Members, Finance Minister, Mr. Abdul Rahim Rather suggested to the Speaker to allow the Members to pay homage to the former Member of the Upper House, Mr. Bilal Lodhi, despite no precedence. The Speaker allowed the House to pay tributes to Mr. Lodhi, who passed away in 2008. Taking part in the Obituary Reference, Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs, Mr. Abdul Rather recalled the services of all the departed leaders for their exemplary role in strengthening political and democratic institutions of the country. The Members who paid rich tributes to the deceased leaders include Prof. Chaman Lal, Mr, Abul Rehman Veeri, Mr. Zulfiqar Ali, Mr. Nizam-ud-Din Bhat, Mr. Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, Mr. Ghulam Hassan Mir, Hakim Mohammad Yasin, Mr. Ashwani Sharma and Ch. Mohammad Aslam.
