| LADAKH REGION WITNESSING TREMENDOUS DEVELOPMENT | | | Leh, September 18,2006. The Ladakh region is witnessing a golden age in matters of development, thanks to the constitution of two Autonomous Hill Development Councils for Leh and Kargil districts. As a result of the establishment of these councils, on the spot decision making has improved the quality of governance beyond recognition. People’s participation in the development effort is to be seen to be believed. The establishment of these Councils has helped develop responsible citizenry in Ladakh as they have become acutely conscious of environmental preservation and their duties as citizens. The Council model is an outstanding success in the area of good governance and can be successfully replicated elsewhere. A power transmission line is being constructed from Srinagar to Leh at a cost of Rs. 634 crores. The Srinagar-Leh road has been declared a national highway and is being upgraded accordingly with a 12 km long tunnel at Zojila to provide year-round access to the Ladakh region. Besides an amount of Rs.80 crores have been provided by the Central Government under the reconstruction plan for the development of infrastructure for the Leh and Kargil Councils. Two new projects, one each in Leh and Kargil have been started for providing assured power supply to the Ladakh region.
