| House boats to go off Dal Lake | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar: In a significant judgement, Jammu and Kashmir High Court today banned functioning of house boats in the endanger Dal Lake in the valley. Meanwhile, the authorities have started sealing of house boats operating in Dal lake and other encroachments surrounding the lake. The Court directed the authority to stop operation, functioning of hotels, house boats and commercial units that have been mentioned in the PCB report. Taking strong exception of non-compliance of its orders related to Dal Lake, the J-K High Court has directed Divisional Commissioner Kashmir to submit an enquiry report within one week, probing negligence charges against some government officers. The Bench comprising Justices Nissar Ahmad Kakroo and Hakim Imtiyaz Hussain in its order issued yesterday criticised the government for taking the matter lightly and wondered whether the officers deputed are even serious about the whole issue. The court further directed the Divisional Commissioner to find out how the illegal constructions came up around the lake area. "He shall also examine the circumstances under which the constructions have come up in spite of the fact that government officials have been deployed in the area," the court said. The Lakes and Waterways Development Authority was also directed by the court to stop the operations of hotels, houseboats and commercial units mentioned in the state pollution board's report filed on January 31. The directions came after court observed that situation has assumed alarming proportions as the lake is a major source of potable water for the city. The case has been listed for next hearing on February 27.
