| Coalition eyes JMC posts: CM meets Corporators | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, FEB 26: In wake of the upcoming elections for the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Jammu Municipal Corporation, the Chief Minister Omar Abbdullah hosted a dinner for the corporators here this evening. The Congress and National Conference are eying the post of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively. At present the Mayor is from the BJP and Deputy Mayor from National Conference. Addressing Corporators Omar Abdullah has said that necessary steps would be taken to strengthen the Municipal Corporations to ensure integrated and planned development of the capita l cities. Addressing corporators of Jammu Municipal Corporation here this evening he said that the democratic institutions need to be made more powerful and economically strong adding that adequate resources generation is imperative for this purpose. Abdullah said that a blue print for comprehensive development of the twin cities, keeping in view the present day requirements and futuristic needs, would be prepared for implementation. “The population of cities has increased alongwith its boundaries but the facilities have not kept pace with the growth of the cities as such measures have to be worked out to bridge this gap”, he added. The Corporators brought to his notice the development needs of their wards and requested for financial support to upgrade basic amenities. The Chief Minister heard them patiently and said that he would discuss the issues relating to the development of cities and towns with the Deputy Chief Minister and concerned officers to work out a mechanism for making Urban Local Bodies financially sound and more effective. The Deputy Chief Minister, Mr. Tara Chand, the Deputy Chairman Legislative Council and Deputy Mayor of Jammu Municipal Corporation were present on the occasion. Later, the Chief Minister interacted with various deputations who called on him their development demands. A deputation from Rafiabad led by MLA Mr. Javid Ahmad Dar during its meeting with Chief Minister requested for special tourism development schemes for the area besides measures for power development. They also requested for employment package for the backward areas of Rafiabad. Other deputations which called on Chief Minister were from Gojjar Nagar, Jammu, Panthachowk, Hazratbal, Rawalpora and Sonawar Srinagar and a deputation of Jammu University Teachers Association led by Prof. Mr. M. K. Tripathi and presented lists of their demands to the Chief Minister. Omar assured the deputationists that their genuine demands would be looked into sympathetically.
