| Over 100 killed on Doda roads in past 8 months | | Another, 2 more dead | | SHARIK NABI Doda, Feb 26: A day after the gruesome road accident that took toll of 41 lives, another road accident has been reported from Doda district in which two persons were killed and eleven others injured. With today’s tragedy, the human toll in road accident across erstwhile Doda district over past eight months has reached 100. As many as 174 persons were injured in these accidents. With in twenty four hours of the barbaric accident, another accident took lives of two persons and left eleven injured when truck driver lost control over steering while negotiating a curve at Mechar, Bhagwah 40km from Doda. The truck plunged into a deep gorge killing two persons. The ill fated truck bearing no JK02S-5745 was on its way from Bhagwah to Doda when it met with accident. The truck collided with several rocks before landing there by killing one lady on spot and leaving others severely injured. On receipt of the information police and administration beside local NGO including Doda Welfare Society and Young Star Cricket Club rushed rescue teams to the spot and bring out all the occupants of the vehicle from the gorge. While 12 injured were sifted to District Hospital Doda of which one succumbed to his injuries while shifting to Doda hospital and of the remaining 11 injured eight were air lifted to GMC Jammu for advance treatment. It is reported that the deceased Sana-ullah son of Nizam Mir, resident of Puneen has hired the vehicle for transporting dry-grass for which they had taken rest of persons as labourers for cutting and loading. The vehicle was loaded and was on its way to Doda. In this connection when traffic officials was contacted they said that at the location it was found that stones were laid in the road and the diameter of road was only 2.4 meter and was the reason for this accident. With the today’s accident a total of 100 persons had got killed and 174 injured during the last eight months record of major accidents held here in erstwhile Doda district. It was the eleventh accident and third in the month of February so far. The reasons for these accidents were mostly revealed as over loading, over speeding, poor road lay-outs and no road safety measures. These are the reasons which were frequently spoken off after each accident but people here are not willing to hear excuses they want results. Giving an example of action against defaulters people here drowned GREF tipper into the same river at Galgandhar because they consider them as responsible for yesterday’s accident in which 41 persons died and 14 injured. People believe that more so it is a blame game being played by district administration, traffic police and other agencies involved in dreaded negligence on part of their duties. However people were of the opinion that it is not only traffic police who is responsible but BRO, PWD and R&B Department is equally responsible for ill managed road lay-out and poor safety measures on the road side. Most of the roads stretch on National Highway-1B and other link roads are single, rough, slide prone, ditches at various places and also devoid of security measures in form of parapets, railings, road signs, barriers, street lights etc. Moreover the delayed clearance of slides and during widening the stones, slides etc too were not taken care off well which make the roads prone to accidents. In addition this road being on river side increases the rate fatality. Social Forestry too has not adopted the areas where plantation is necessary especially on the river side because it is the trees which can stop the vehicle before going into deep gorge. It is worth mentioning that the administration being aware of the condition of roads and over loading but neither corrective measure has not been taken nor additional buses have been procured to feed overloading passengers. In this connection when Deputy Commissioner Doda, Sharief-ud-Din was contacted he said that police can enforce laws but can not mend people, it is the collective responsibility of both police, administration and more importantly of public. Adding he said that in the month of January alone 1095 vehicles were fined, 28 vehicles were seized and Rs 310050 were collected from violators as compound fine and what else we can do, said DC. Traffic Police have their own tale to tell. They said that it is hard to check overloading on link roads because there are at least 19 vehicles short in Doda district and 13 in Kishtwar district and same has been conveyed to district administration. However they have been holding driver/passenger awareness camp in addition of slapping hefty fines for over loading, moreover the driver of yesterday’s accident was fined for over loading earlier and what else we can do, added Traffic officer on the pretext of anonymity. In reply of a question regarding driving of vehicles by in-experienced persons officer said that it is the duty of transport officer to issue driving license only to those who qualify driving tests.
