Unity in Mumbai, division in Kashmir

In a political landscape fraught with polarization and discord, recent events have underscored a perplexing paradox in politics.
At the concluding event of Bharat Jodo Nyay yatra held in Mumbai, National Conference (NC) President Dr Farooq Abdullah and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti stood shoulder to shoulder, vowing to collectively combat the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Their unity in the commercial capital of India, resonating with calls for solidarity and resistance against BJP, appeared to signal a rare moment of bipartisan collaboration. However, this display of unity starkly contrasts with the volatile political climate in Kashmir, where both parties are poised to engage in a bitter battle against each other.
The spirit of unity between NC and PDP dissipates once we shift our gaze towards Kashmir, where the NC and PDP find themselves locked in a bitter power struggle. Despite their shared rhetoric against the BJP at the national level, both parties are entrenched in a fierce battle for supremacy within the region.
The political landscape of Kashmir is characterized by shifting alliances, opportunistic maneuvers, and deep-seated rivalries, often overshadowing broader concerns of governance and development.
The irony of this situation cannot be overstated. While Dr. Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti pledge to fight shoulder to shoulder against a common adversary in Mumbai, their respective parties are gearing up to confront each other in Kashmir. This dissonance between rhetoric and reality not only underscores the complexities of Indian politics but also highlights the challenges inherent in forging genuine partnerships amidst entrenched regional interests and historical grievances.
The discord between the NC and PDP in Kashmir not only undermines their collective resistance against the BJP but also perpetuates a cycle of political instability and fragmentation within the region. The inability of Kashmir’s political leadership to set aside differences and prioritize the welfare of its constituents has exacerbated the sense of disillusionment among the voters.
It is imperative for the NC and PDP to stop engaging in a zero-sum game for political dominance. They must channel their energies towards fostering genuine dialogue, inclusive governance, and sustainable development.
The paradoxical juxtaposition of unity in Mumbai and division in Kashmir serves as a poignant reminder of the intricacies and contradictions inherent in politics.
