CM’s big first shot in Assembly, gets opposition wrong on facts
Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 27: Leaving little for the Opposition Peoples Democratic Party to defend on a charge thrown in the legislative assembly, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today claimed with no confidence that no damage has been done to the civilian property in Banidpore during and encounter between security forces and militants on January 29. Peoples Democratic Party legislator from Bandipore Nizamuddin Bhat had challenged the Chief Minister on his information of loss that occurred in Bandipore. The MLA had said that the Chief Minister was fed with wrong information. Assuring the legislator that facts will be brought before the House, the Chief Minister this morning deputed Rural Development Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar along with local MLA Nizamuddin Bhat and Director General of Police Kuldeep Khoda to Bandipore to ascertain the facts. Based on their report, the Chief Minister told the House that his information was absolutely correct and there was no loss to the property as claimed by the MLA. The Chief Minister said that he did not believe in mere sloganeering and was worried when his information was contested by the PDP, following which he assured the House that a factual report on the matter would be sought. He said the time has come to prick the PDP balloon of lies, adding that now that the facts are before the House, he leaves it to the conscience of the PDP MLA to decide his next course of action. The Chief Minister said that Mr. Sagar would share with the House the facts he along with the PDP MLA, DGP, DC and SSP-concerned have ascertained on-the-spot. Upon this, Sagar informed the House that the fact-finding team that included PDP MLA concerned reached Ayatmulla early morning today and found only one house belonging to one Abdul Aziz Lone completely damaged for which the Damage Assessment Committee had already proposed compensation of Rs. 6.50 lakh. Sagar said that the incident happened on January 28, 2009 and the Damage Assessment Committee comprising Tehsildar and Assistant Executive Engineer prepared the Loss Assessment Report within a week and according to which 13 other houses have broken windowpanes and minor cracks and the families are residing comfortably in those houses, as against PDP MLA’s claim that 30 houses had been rendered inhabitable. Among these, he said, 13 houses have suffered damage up to Rs. 500 only, nine houses between Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 5,000, one house and cowshed up to Rs. 80,000 and one house up to Rs. 20,000 only. Sagar read out the names of the persons who continue to live in their houses alleged to have been rendered inhabitable by the PDP MLA.
