| Various Institutes celebrate Science Day | | |
Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 28: Students of the Model Institute of Engineering and Technology celebrated the Science Day in their institute. It was celebrated with enthusiasm as the students took part in various competitions organized on this day. Each event was directed to motivate the students to take the scientific approach in their day to day life and also to encourage them to take on research in various fields of science. Prof. S.K.Sharma, Principal, inaugurated the event and enunciated the importance of this Day. Science Day is celebrated to honour Dr C.V Raman who discovered various scattering properties of light. This discovery was announced on 28th February, 1928 and based on which he was awarded the Nobel Prize. He brought fame to India in the times when our country was still being ruled by the British. Dr C.V. Raman was the first Asian and Non-white person to have got the Nobel prize. Prof. Ankur Gupta, Joint Director and Head of the Computer Science & Engineering Department conceptualized the events and gave guidance to instill enthusiasm in the student fraternity. Prof. Gourav Khajuria, Dhruv Kumar and Monika Balgotra gave impetus by organizing Painting, Collage Making and Photography competitions. Vishisht Anand of CSE Department and Ankush Sharma of ECE Department were among the top position holders in the Painting Competitiion. Ashutosh Sharma from IT Department got the first prize in Collage Making whereas Nitesh and Madhvi Mathur, both from ECE Departments were the Runners Up. HoDs of various departments viz. Dr A.S.Bali, Dr R.D.Vishwakerma, Prof M.K.Jain and Prof B.B.Mehmi were all praise for the students. Meanwhile ,the science club of GCW Parade Jammu has celebrated 28th Feb. as National Science Day. The poster making college making competition and lecture by the resource parson were organized on this occasion. Prof. Lalit Magotra was the chief guest on this occasion. Dr. B.L. Gupta, HOD Physics, in his welcome address, gave a brief introduction about the importance of National Science Day- 2009. This years is also declared as year of Science as well as International Year of Astronomy and Planet Earth. Prof. Lalit Magaotra, Chief guest, in his speech threw light on the life and works of Sir C.V. Raman and urged the students and teaching community to follow his footsteps by developing scientific temper in their thinking and deeds which will make India a great scientific manpower in the world. Dr. P.V.K.S. Baba, associate professor, department of Physics and electronics. University of Jammu delivered a lecture on the topic “Quarks and large hadron collider (LHC) Experiment. He dwelt at length about the grand Unification theory (GUI), Black holes, quark gluon plasma and higgs particle called as god particle. Prof. Savitri Sharma, Principal, congratulated the science club for organizing this function. She suggested the students to actively participate in these activities to develop scientific outlook and sense of competition. She also said that women should not gag behind in the field of science. Dr. Ravinder Chadha, convenor of the club paid vote of thanks to chief guest, resource parson, faculty members and students for making this function a success. He suggested the women students to come forward and become scientists to contribute to the progress of the nation.
