| Govt’s criminal negligence responsible for killings on roads: Puri | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 28: While sharing the deep sense of shock and grief with the people of Doda district and sympathies for them by the VIPs of the state over death of 41 passengers of the bus that rolled down near Pul Doda, Barlaj Puri, convenor PUCL J&K State, held criminal negligence on the part of the successive government for this tragedy. Even during the brief tenure of the present government, he said, five more accidents on Kishtwar-Batote road, have taken place besides this tragedy, taking a toll of 26 human lives. According to Puri, while Chenab Valley is the main source of power supply in the state and export to the neighbouring states and its forest wealth contributes maximum to the state exchequer, their reckless exploitation has caused deep erosion of its soil and disrupted the Kishtwar-Batote highway. Viable connectivity within the area and with outside world, which should have received priority, had been completely neglected, he added. Puri demanded mutli-facet enquiry into the short term and long term causes of repeated accidents and deplorable condition of the roads in the area. Meanwhile he urged the government to substantially raise the level of compensation to the bereaved families from the paltry sum of Rs 25,000/- to provide employment to their eligible members as a partial atonement of acts of omissions and commissions of the state government.
