JAMMU, Mar 28: Nuzhat Gul, Secretary of the J&K Sports Council, emphasized the pivotal role of sports in combating the drug menace during the opening ceremony of the Softball/Baseball5 Championship 2023-24 at the Football Ground, GGM Science College.
The championship, organized by the J&K Softball Association with the support of the Jammu & Kashmir Sports Council, attracted athletes from all 14 districts of the Union Territory, showcasing a remarkable display of talent and enthusiasm.
Nuzhat Gul, gracing the event as the Chief Guest, lauded the efforts of the J&K Sports Council and the Softball Association in fostering the development of softball and other recognized sports across the region. She underscored the significance of sports in diverting youth away from the perils of drugs and social vices, emphasizing the role of athletes as ambassadors of peace and unity.
Highlighting the growing popularity of softball in Jammu & Kashmir, Ms. Nuzhat Gul commended the widespread participation and achievements in the sport, noting its inclusion as a regular event in prestigious international competitions like the Olympic Games and Asian Games.
The championship, featuring over 400 athletes across various age categories, including Sub-Junior, Junior, and Senior divisions for both boys and girls, is a testament to the growing interest and talent in softball within the UT of J&K.
The three-day event, sponsored by the J&K Sports Council, aims to promote sportsmanship and camaraderie among participants while providing a platform for budding athletes to showcase their skills.
The successful conduct of the championship owes much to the unwavering support and dedication of individuals such as S. Baljinder Pal Singh, Divisional Sports Officer Jammu, and Sh. Vikas Mangotra, Manager of the Football Ground at GGM Science College Jammu, along with the technical officials from the Sports Council.
With 14 matches already played in various categories, the championship promises thrilling competition and serves as a testament to the commitment of J&K towards promoting sports and nurturing athletic talent within the region.
