After terming PDP ‘irrelevant,’ Omar looks towards Mehbooba to help NC
Lok Sabha Polls

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Apr 2: After terming Peoples Democratic Party “irrelevant” and announcing that National Conference would field candidates from all the three seats in Kashmir, Omar Abdullah on Tuesday exuded hope that PDP may not field candidates against NC in any of the Lok Sabha constituencies.
Talking to reporters here Omar said that PDP president Mehbooba Mufti hasn’t shown any intention to field candidates against the NC.
He referred to a recent rally of the INDIA bloc in Delhi, where Mehbooba Mufti shared the stage with NC president Dr Farooq Abdullah and reiterated PDP’s commitment to the alliance.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, “It seems that Omar has realized that if the PDP fields its candidates it can make the competition tough and the NC candidates can face the heat.”
Pertinently, the National Conference has fielded prominent Gujjar leader and former minister, Mian Altaf from Anantnag-Rajouri parliamentary constituency, while Ghulam Nabi Azad, president of the DPAP has also decided to try his luck from the same seat.
“If the PDP president Mehbooba Mufti too decides to contest from Anantnag-Rajouri parliamentary constituency it would make things difficult for Mian Altaf,” the analyst added.
He said, “When talks about seat sharing between NC, Congress and PDP were going on, Omar categorically refused to leave any seat for the PDP, especially Anantnag-Rajouri seat. He (Omar) had claimed that PDP had come third in 2019 parliamentary elections and this seat cannot be left for the PDP. The NC vice-president had written off PDP by terming the PDP irrelevant.”
Meanwhile, Omar also hit out at the media for making efforts to create a wedge between his party and the PDP. “Why are you making the PDP fight us? Has the PDP said anywhere that they will contest elections? It is you people who are fuelling this. I heard the speech of Mehboba Mufti in Delhi, she said Farooq sahib and we are together and we will not break the INDIA alliance. Why are you trying to make us fight? ” he asked.
An observer said, “Omar himself started the fight and now he is blaming the media. He should go through his statements which he issued during the past few months.”
