AMANDEEP SINGH Jammu, March 3: As terrorist attack on the cricketers had worldwide reactions and concerns, the politicians, separatists and cricketers in Jammu and Kashmir have come with strongest terms calling for separating sports from politics. Chief Minister Mr. Omar Abdullah today called for separating sports from politics even as he wanted Pakistan to see reason and correct the damage caused to it by the forces it had promoted and protected at one point in time. “Sports and politics have to be separated and I do not think any cause should allow sportspersons to be targeted”, Mr. Abdullah said while talking with media persons here this afternoon on the Lahore incident in which Sri Lankan sportsmen were attacked. He described the incident as unfortunate and said that perhaps it was for the first time since Munich Olympics that sportspersons were attacked. “It is unfortunate for the entire sub-continent”, the Chief Minister said adding that the only positive thing about it was that there were no deaths. “We should thank God for that”, he said. Hurriyat Conference Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq expressed his sympathies with the family of those who were killed in the attack and also with the visiting Sri Lankan cricketers and said “the attack was carried to deface image of Pakistan globally”. He stated “Who ever the terrorist are, whether from the country or from outside, they don’t want to burly Pakistan” The Chairman of the other faction of Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani termed it as worst kind of terrorism. He said “it seems to be a well planned attack at the international level to weaken Pakistan” and stressed the need to settle Kashmir issue for perpetual peace in south Asia including Pakistan. He also demanded a probe by some impartial agency into the attack. An invitee in State Sports Council, Ranjit Kalra termed it as the black-day in the history of cricket and condemned the attack on the Sri Lankan team. He added that there is no doubt the Pakistani authorities were unable to protect the visiting team properly inspite the prior threat. This unfortunate incident will have a multifaceted affects not only on Cricket in the sub-continent but also on the security scenario. Mayank Goswami, former member of J&K Ranji team also condemned the attack and termed it as an unfortunate day.
