KVK promotes Scientific cultivation of strawberry

REASI, Apr 4: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the aegis of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J) is promoting the scientific cultivation of strawberry in Reasi distt. of J&K under the dynamic stewardship of Vice Chancellor, Prof. BN Tripathi and Director Extension, Prof. Amrish Vaid of SKUAST-J. According to Sr. Scientist & Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi, Dr. Banarsi Lal, Reasi distt. has an immense potential in strawberry cultivation and farmers can fetch more returns by growing it commercially. He said that KVK is promoting and providing all the necessary technical support regarding the scientific cultivation of strawberry to the farmers. He further said that KVK, Reasi has provided quality runners and black mulching sheets to the farmers to demonstrate the scientific technologies on strawberry cultivation. He further said that KVK is acquainting the farmers on the Integrated Nutrient Management, weed management, disease management, quality improvement and post-harvest technologies in strawberry crop. He informed that strawberry is rich in proteins, calcium, phosphorus, potassium and vitamins such as A, B1, B2 and C and is considered as the natural source of antioxidants. He added that use of mulching sheets in strawberry cultivation help in the moisture conservation, weed management and quality of fruits. He narrated that better quality of fruits can help to find more marketing channels and thus the farmers can fetch more farm returns. He told that KVK scientists are guiding the farmers on the preparation of organic formulations so that they can utilize them for organic crops production. He added that use of organic formulations can help to reduce the cost of cultivation and increase the quality of fruits. He informed that many farmers of the area have adopted the technologies promoted by KVK, Reasi and they are fetching more farm returns.
