| Kotwal for seismic sage constructions | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, MARCH 05 - Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Dr. Pawan Kotwal today inaugurated a two-day training programme on the basics of earthquake engineering for the students and staff of Government Polytechnic college, Jammu. The programme has been arranged as part of the ongoing Urban Earthquake Vulnerability Reduction Project, an initiative under Government of India -United National Development Programme. Speaking on the occasion Dr. Kotwal stressed that reducing vulnerability factors in disasters like earthquakes lies in developing seismic safe structures which can minimize risks to the life and property. He said that engineering students should be provided the technical knowledge to develop expertise in assessing the technical laxity in the present structures and planning of retrofitting designs for making these structures less vulnerable to the impact of earthquake. He also emphasized on sensitization and awareness among the people to promote seismic safe construction methods. A video presentation on various aspects of earthquake, its causes and impact and precautionary measures to be taken was also shown during the programme. Experts and Resource persons interacted with the students and discussed various technical aspects during the programme. Among others present on the occasion were Principal Polytechnic College, staff and students.
