| Suggestions power in as members discuss power scenario | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, March 05 – A threadbare discussion was held In the Legislative Assembly today, on the current power scenario in the State.
About 36 members from treasury and opposition benches participated in the discussion, which was moved by Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta, Mr. Rafi Ahmad Mir and Mr. Mushtaq Ahmad Shah.
While initiating the discussion, Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta expressed concern over power curtailments in the State which, he said, adversely affects people, particularly student community, during examination period. He demanded for improvement in the power sector and steps taken to ensure round-the-clock power supply to the people.
Ms Sakina Ittoo deliberated on tremendous potential of hydro electricity in the State and in this regard demanded government’s action for completion of Aharbal Power Project, for which the foundation stone was laid years ago. She also stressed on the need for formulation of an effective and comprehensive power policy by the Government, which would address the power concerns of the people.
Mr. Rafi Ahmad Mir, demanded attention towards rural electrification. He suggested for a comprehensive policy in power sector for providing electricity to the far-flung areas of the State.
Mr. Mushtaq Ahmad Shah also raised the issue of persistent power cuts in Tral and demanded uninterrupted power supply in Tral.
Mr. Harsh Dev Singh and Mr. Abdul Ahad Khan demanded that Central Government should be approached and motivated for giving more share of power generated by the projects based on the water sources of the State.
Ch. Mohammad Ramzan demanded utilization of natural water resources of the State for setting up of power projects, besides checking pilferage and plugging loopholes in the system.
Mr. Abdul Majid Wani, Mr. G. M. Saroori, Mr. Zulifikar Ali and Peerzada Mansoor demanded implementation and speeding up of Rajiv Gandhi Vidyuti Karan Yojna to augment power supply in the State especially in erstwhile Doda, Rajouri and Anantnag districts.
Mr.Nasir Aslam Wani suggested involvement of private sector in construction of mini power projects in the State.
Mr. Raman Bhalla said that despite 90% of households being metered by the PDD in Gandhinagar constituency, power supply round the clock remains a distant dream.
Mr. Waqar Rasool said that 60% of Banihal are still un-electrified. He advocated for exploiting small rivers in the area for developing mini hydro-electric power project in the area.
Mr. Abdul Rehman Veeri while highlighting the importance of power sector said that it was fundamental for transforming the socio-economic condition of any nation. He advocated for improving distribution and containing transmission losses in the power sector. Mr. Javid Ahmad and Mir Saifullah also espoused their views on the subject.
Dr. Manohar Lal impressed upon the Government to take measures regarding getting due share of power produced from Ranjit Sagar Hydro Electric Project.
Mr. Balwant Singh Mankotia underscored the need to maximize the power production of Chenani Hydro Electric power project as it was producing less power than its potential due to some mechanical faults in the project.
Mr. Jugal Kishore advocated for harnessing the water resources of the State by making mini power projects on the pattern followed by Government of Himachal Pradesh and added that such projects have proved to be environment-friendly, unlike the mega projects which affect environment adversely.
Mr. Nizam-ud-Din Bhat said that the sorry state of affairs for as power sector is concerned to because of the least priority of the sector to getting. He stressed on developing a political will and a consensus to strengthen the power infrastructure in the State.
Mr. Qamar Ali Akhoon and Mr. Bharat Bushan stressed for development of mini power projects at district and block levels. Mr. Nazir Ahmad Gurezi impressed upon the Government to construct hydro electric power project in Gurez to meet the power needs of the people of the area.
Mr. Shabir Ahmad Khan said that full implementation of centrally sponsored schemes like APDRP can help in improving the power situation of the State
