World Earth Day celebrated at GDC Sidhra

JAMMU, Apr 22: Eco Club "Srishti" and NSS Unit of GDC Sidhra under the aegis of IQAC organized a poster making competition to commemorate World Earth Day 2024. Theme of the competition was "Planet Vs Plastic".
World Earth Day is a globally recognized event that is celebrated on April 22 every year to remind everyone that it is our responsibility to take care of the health of the planet. Amidst the climate change crisis and rising temperatures and pollution levels, this day holds a lot of importance. This year's theme was "Planet vs Plastic" as there is an urgent need to end plastics for the sake of human and planetary health. This year's theme, calls to advocate for widespread awareness on the health risk of plastics, rapidly phase out all single use plastics, urgently push for a strong UN Treaty on Plastic Pollution.
Around 10 students participated in the competition and prepared wonderful posters that reflected the theme very explicitly. Posters were adjudged by Dr. Harpreet Kour, HOD Political Science and Dr. Mehmood Ahmed, HOD Urdu. First prize was won by Suhaani of B.A Sem-II, second prize was bagged by Asif Iqbal of B.A Sem-II and Shahjahan Ahmed of B.A Sem-II was adjudged at third position. Winners were presented with mementoes and certificates of merit. All other participants were distributed certificates of merit. Principal of the College, Dr. G.S Rakwal felicitated the winners and appreciated their efforts. He also spoke on the importance and relevance of celebrating the Earth day. He emphasized on the importance of conserving our planet and also talked about the steps that we can take to reduce the use of plastics.
Event was organized successfully by Dr. Anshu Gupta, Convenor Eco-Club & Head Department of Enviromental Sciences and Dr. Purvaiya Hans, NSS Program officer with active support of Committee members of Eco-Club and NSS Unit of the college.
