| 36th JU inter-College athletics meet concludes | | Governor distributes prizes at valedictory function | | Early Times report JAMMU, MARCH 06 - Governor, Mr. N. N. Vohra, has said that sports are an important component, along with academics, for balanced personality development of youth. The Governor was attending the prize distribution function of the 3-day 36th Inter-Collegiate Annual Athletics Meet, organized by the University of Jammu, here this evening. The Governor called upon the students to take keen interest and spare some time every day for sports and physical activities, as these contribute towards enabling superior coordination between the mind and the body, promote discipline and team spirit and promote grit and determination, which are valuable assets in later life. He emphasized upon the students to put in hard work both in sports and academics and bring laurels to the State. The Governor, while lauding the University of Jammu for organizing the event, wished all success to the participants of the Athletic Meet in future sports events. The Governor distributed prizes among the winners and runners up of various sports events organized by the University during the current academic year, as well as to those who excelled in the 36th Inter-Collegiate Athletics Meet. He also gave away prizes to various distinguished students of the Jammu University who have brought laurels in different national level championships. The Governor declared the Athletics Meet closed at the end of the colourful ceremony. A souvenir was also presented to the Governor by the Vice Chancellor on the occasion. Earlier, Vice Chancellor, Jammu University, Prof. Varun Sahni, in his welcome address said that all possible measures would be taken for the promotion of sports and providing better infrastructure and facilities to the students. He said that inter-University sports competitions would be organized between the Universities of Kashmir and Jammu in five disciplines from the next academic session. Director Sports and Physical Education, Jammu University, Prof. Lokesh Verma presented a report about the tournament as well as on the sports infrastructure available in the University and that in the pipeline. A mass PT display, Bhartiyam, was presented by 380 students of the MC Khalsa College of Education on the occasion, which was highly appreciated by the spectators. Four athletic events were held in the afternoon today. These include 100 metres race for women, 100 metres race for men, 4x100 metres race for women and 4x100 metres race in men’s category. Senior authorities of the University, faculty members, Principals of the participating colleges, prominent persons, sports lovers and a number of students were present at the valedictory function.
