| JU: Excellence and irregularities | | | For past some years we have been repeatedly told and sought to be convinced that there is only center of excellence in the region which has rare parallels in the country. Excellence lies in knowing one’s limits, and doggedly maintaining the best standards within those limits. The latest report of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India has come with a very disappointing story on the state of affairs in University of Jammu. Some times back there were some lonely and lowly voices of concern on the falling academic standards in the University. However, those voices were completely and brutally sought to be muzzled by a variety of means –many such instruments of crushing the dissent were applied which stretched far beyond the campus. Instead of discussing such complaints and questions in a democratic manner, the public attention was drawn towards academically irrelevant but glamorous issues. People were shown the heights of Zorawar Singh auditorium and its beauty inside when they asked about academic standards. People were told about alliances with the Universities and institutions in Canada and elsewhere in the world when they asked about discipline, precisely the lack of it, at the Campus. The eyes fascinated with these achievements grew far higher in number than the ears which could have heard the voices of logics and reasoning. Looking at one glaring report of the Audit tells the whole story of the University of Jammu’s march to achieving global heights and becoming Oxford of South Asia. The report says that the University took some ‘students’ to a study tour to China to apprise them of latest trends in journalism. The fact of the matter, however, is that University of Jammu does not have any school or department of journalism and mass communication. The report further says that the contingent to China did not include any student at all. Then who were the people who flew to China. A probe reveals that the contingent included three political leaders from Congress and National Conference who are also the proud owners of leading. This tour cost the University nearly nine lakh rupees and it is left to the authorities to explain as what cause did these politicians served in raising understanding of the media. Academics, research and evaluation is a sad story. In a period of ten years only 500 students enrolled for doctorate degree. Around half of them could submit their thesis in five to eight years and not more than ten have been approved. Delay in declaration of results has been tracked as long as 100 days 1200 days. In a period of six years 26 per cent of the total students who failed in various undergraduate examinations were declared successful in re-evaluation. 26 per cent is more than one fourth of the sum and as many students getting justice after an arduous process of re-evaluation means that nothing can be faultier than the examination and evaluation system of the University of Jammu. Seen in the backdrop of so called global status of the University of Jammu, the latest audit report underlines a betrayal of trust.
