| Terrorist strikes- a rebuff to Mufti | | | Ironically enough a day after former Chief Minister and PDP patron, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed reiterated the party demand for demilitarization of J&K as well as strongly pleaded for government of India to involve militants in the negotiations for restoration of peace in the state, the terrorists struck in a big way in Srinagar, killing 8 persons, including 5 tourists from Bengal and injuring over 40 others. Grenades were lobbed at six different places within a period of three hours, targeting mainly the tourists from outside the state who came to Kashmir on the assurances of the Chief Minister and other functionaries of the state government that the conditions are perfectly normal in the valley and the lives of the visitors are safe. Not only this but these enemies of peace, with whom Mufti pleads for the Indian government to hold negotiations with, for bringing back peace in the troubled J&K state struck on an unprecedented large scale in the commercial capital of the country, Mumbai killing about 140 people and injuring over 400 others. The explosives were triggered almost simultaneously in the running local trains near different stations of Mumbai when a large number of people were traveling by these. Whether it is a co-incidence or a well planned strategy on the part of the terrorists to strike on a single day in the capital of Jammu and Kashmir and the commercial capital of the country. Whether these dastardly acts are the handiwork of same module of terrorists or different outfits have been responsible, will be known only after the thorough enquiry is held. It is enough to here to state that such pleadings by Mufti and his party, who claim to be in the mainstream and interested in return of peace in the state is absurd, under the conditions prevailing. Not only the terrorists, but even the over grown secessionists like hard core Sayeed Geelani's group of secessionists have repeatedly spurned the offers of government of India for talks. Even the so called moderate faction of Hurriyat, led by Maulvi Omer is willing to talk with the top Indian leadership, dictating their conditions including acceptance by the government of India the Hurriyat being the sole representative of the voice of Kashmiris. Under these circumstances how can the central government involve the separatists in talks? Does Mufti want the government of India and the Prime Minister to lye prostrate or bend on his knees to beg the militants to come for negotiation with the government of India? Mufti, who himself headed the state government for three years between November 2002 and November 2005 could nor bring the militants on the negotiation table, despite the fact that the government of India had put full faith in him and responded positively to all his suggestions, with regard to return of peace in the state. Mufti will be well advised to stop playing to gallery and playing politics with his own coalition partner, the Congress, in his bid to consolidate his vote bank among the separatists in Kashmir. In the interest of the fast return of peace in the state as well as for the solidarity of the country and welfare of people, Mufti will be well advised to co-operate in the efforts of the Central government as well as the government of J&K and the security forces to break the bone of violence mongers and enemies of the peace. Only after that these elements can be called to the negotiation table.
