3/8/2009 2:59:07 PM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 7 : Ornaments worth lakhs were burnt in two jewellery shops after a fire broke due to short circuit during the wee hours today in the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir, police sources here said.

''Besides gold and silver ornaments, some portions of the shops namely Om Prakash Suri and Puri Jewellers located in Lakhdata Bazar area of old city were damaged when a fire broke out during the wee hours,'' the sources told .

They said on receiving the information, police parties rushed to the spot while five fire engines were also pressed into service and the fire was controlled from being spreading.

''The fire could have been controlled much earlier but it took around one hour as fire tenders could not reach the site in time due to the poor roads,'' a senior police officer said.
