Jammu/Srinagar, March 07: "The incident would be investigated and the guilty punished," Minister for Finance, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Abdul Rahim Rather said in Jammu today. An investigation would be ordered into the police firing on protesters that left one dead and 30 injured in Srinagar yesterday, where normal life was crippled as authorities clamped prohibitory orders. He was addressing a press conference after the state Assembly was adjourned for half an hour following pandemonium caused by slogan-shouting opposition members demanding action against the security personnel involved in the incident. A youth was killed and over 30 people, including six cops and a CRPF jawan, were injured at Nowhatta in the interior city yesterday when police and paramilitary personnel opened fire on violent groups of youth demanding release of detained Hurriyat leaders.
Rather said the government shared the concern of the members of the Assembly over the loss of human life and the house was in unison in condemning it. Referring to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's commitment to zero tolerance on human rights violations, Rather said that the government has received the Sopore incident enquiry report and its findings would be made public shortly. "The Bomai (Sopore) report has been received by the government within the stipulated 15-day period. Give us three or four days to study it. I promise action under law will be taken by the government," Rather said. Criticising the PDP Legislators for creating pandemonium in the house today, the minister said the government should have been allowed to make a statement over the incident. "The Speaker Mohammad Akbar Lone requested them to allow the government to make its point, but they did not cooperate," he said. Treasury benches also protested about the loss of human life, he said adding that the government has repeatedly reaffirmed that the guilty would be punished and human rights violations would not be tolerated at any cost. In reply to a question, the minister said there were certain vested interests that do not want the situation to improve in the state and added the government could not be blamed for that.
