Gender equality beyond symbolism

JAMMU, March 9, 2009: To mark the International Women’s Day on March 8, J&K State Commission for Women in collaboration with J&K Women Development Corporation and Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Limited, a function was organised at Government College for Women, Gandhinagar, Jammu, today.
The highlight of the function was symposium on the topic, ‘Violence free home, violence free work place is a women’s right’ in which students of Women College, Gandhinagar and Women College, Parade expressed their views. It was opined that women have moved forward in many ways by making their presence felt in every field. Yet, even today they are suffering violence both at home as well as at their work place, with speakers unequivocally raising voice for physical, emotional, financial and political emancipation of women where they realise the right of living as equal citizens of the country. Those who participated in the symposium included, Shreya Jain, Shreya Sharma, Aseema and Wani Avasthy.
Secretary J&K State Women Commission Ms Hafiza Muzzafar, Managing Director, J&K Women Development Corporation Dr. Nahid Soz and Manager HRD Hindustan Coca-Cola Mr Vivek Tyagi presided over the function.
Noted social activist Ms. Rita Jatinder, Director, AIDS Prevention Society, Dr. Wani, retd Director School Education, Mrs. Atika, Advocate Ms. Seema Shekar, Principal Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar Ms Nalini Kohli and Principals of different schools were also present on the occasion.
Dr. Nahid Soz, in her inaugural address, reaffirmed the Commission’s resolve to work for women empowerment and the role of SHGs in achieving financial self-reliance among women. She especially mentioned the women who have been victims of militancy but have joined the Corporation in raising their voice against suppression of women. She reflected the paradigm shift in the status of women in the society, adding that much still needs to be done for bringing them at par with men.
A scintillating cultural programme was presented on the occasion, the highlight of which were kashmiri songs and rouf by Self-Help Group (SHG), Pattan, SHG Baramulla and Jagarna dance by SHG, R. S. Pura. Dance by Pooja Thakur of Alexander Memorial School and the students of New Era Environment School left the audience spell bound.
Dr. Wani, Director AIDS Prevention Society, highlighted the role of women in creating AIDS awareness and the challenges before them in bringing a social control against the causes leading to this dreaded disease.
Speaking on the occasion, Secretary J&K State Women Commission Ms. Hafiza Muzzafar said that the events like International Women’s Day should not remain as symbolic gestures to remind ourselves of the achievements registered by women in different fields but, should strengthen the resolve of agencies like J&K State Women Commission to fight against the injustices, violence, discrimination and suppression meted out to the fairer sex, who have been reduced to second class citizens. She also welcomed the efforts of the corporate sector, particularly the Coca Cola Company for lending a helping hand to the Commission in spreading the message of women empowerment.
