| Gupta reviews E&T performance | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, MARCH 09 -The Excise Commissioner, Mr Pradeep Gupta, convened a meeting here today to review performance of the Excise Department. All the senior officers of the Department including the concerned Deputy Excise Commissioners and Excise and Taxation officers posted in all the regions of the State participated. It was informed that the Department has collected revenue of Rs 42 crore in the month of February 2009, Rs 3.5 crore more than corresponding month in the previous year. The Department has cumulatively collected Rs 457 crore in the current year upto ending February 2009. Mr Gupta impressed upon the officers to make all out efforts to recover the targeted amount of Rs 530 crore by 31st March, 2009. Reviewing the progress of major projects under execution in the Department it was informed that while the construction of the Toll Post at Upshi has been completed at the cost of Rs 40 lakh, the one at Udhampur is nearing completion at a cost of Rs 320.00 lakh. A Toll Plaza is being constructed at Lakhanpur at a cost of Rs 3220.00 lakh and at Nagri at the cost of Rs 885.00 lakh. Observing that the execution of these two projects has fallen behind schedule, Mr Gupta exhorted upon the concerned executing agencies to speed up the work. Mr Gupta instructed the officers to tour their Ranges intensively and inspect each licensee in their area at least once every month. The officers were impressed upon to gear up the enforcement activities to eradicate bootlegging and illicit distillation of liquor by conducting frequent raids and surprise checks. Stringent action will be taken against the offenders trying to evade payment of excise duty and toll tax, Mr Gupta warned.
