| Forest protection policy on anvil | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, MARCH 09– The Minister for Forests, Mian Altaf Ahmad today said that comprehensive plan would be formulated to preserve and protect the green treasure of the State. He said that all vulnerable zones where rampant smuggling is going on, would be protected by engaging manpower, besides seeking help from other security agencies to arrest the menace of smuggling. The Minister assured that measures would be taken to further streamline the functioning of the Forest Department. The Minister was replying to supplementaries of a question raised by Mr. Ali Mohammad Sofi, in the House today. The Minister said all pending cases of those in whose favour timber has been sanctioned, would be cleared by the end of March 2009. He said fresh survey would be conducted to identify dry and fallen trees so that the same could be auctioned on first come first serve basis. He said that timber procured from the clearance of Mughal road would be provided to the earthquake victims of Poonch district, very soon. The Minister said that presently 842 sanctioned cases are pending with the department which would be supplied timber very soon. He said that SFC is a commercial organization and sale of timber through open auction on competitive market rates is done in its sale depots to cater to public requirements. The supplementaries were also raised by Mr. M. Y. Taing, Mr Mohammad Sharief Niaz, Mr. Mohammad Rashid Qureshi Mr. Abdul Gani Vakil and Mr. P. Namgyal.
