| 17.20 MGD additional water for Jammu city soon | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, MARCH 09 – Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Mr. Taj Mohi-u-Din admitted there was shortage of drinking water in Jammu city particularly in Janipura, Talab Tillo, Krishna Nagar, Subash Nagar, Toph Sherkhanian, Shakti Nagar and Rajpura areas of Jammu West constituency, adding that these areas are getting water supply once a day. Citing the reasons for the shortage, the Minister said there is a mismatch between demand and supply on account of ever-increasing population, urbanization and migration in Jammu city from other parts of the State as well under-utilization of the installed capacity and leakages due to wornout machinery and pipes. He said that against the present demand of approximately 37.00 MG per day for entire Jammu city, the availability of water currently is 24.73 MG per day thereby leading to a shortfall of 12.27 MGD. Replying to a Calling Attention Notice by Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta, regarding acute shortage of drinking water in certain areas of Jammu city, Mr. Taj said an additional intake well/filtration plant at Sitlee, under execution by JKPCC, is nearing completion and is likely to add 5.40 MGD by April end this year while as the intake well for Boria Filtration Plant, under construction by ERA, is likely to add another 1.80 MGD by August this year. The Minister said that construction of 51 tube-wells is going on at an accelerated pace by ERA in Raipur-Domana, Jammu West, Jammu East and Gandhinagar constituencies. Out of these, 16 tube-wells are already functional and the remaining 35 are likely to be commissioned by March this year. He also said that approximately another 10.00 MGD water would be added by 2009-10.
