| Srinagar reels under undeclared curfew | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar: Strict curfew-like restrictions remained in place in most areas of the old city for the third consecutive day Monday against the killing of a youth allegedly by Paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force last Friday. Meanwhile, protest demonstrations were held in Rainawari, the hometown of slain youth—Shahid Ahmad Ahangar son of Muhammad Khalil, Monday morning after the prayers on his ‘Charum’ (fourth) were held. Eyewitnesses told Press Bureau of India that the youth, shouting slogans in favour of “Freedom” and against troops, marched few paces before posse of Police and CRPF swooped down on them by resorting to baton charge. Some youth, witnesses said also pelted stones at them but no one was injured in the clashes that continued for half an hour. Sources said that the Nowhatta, Gojwara, Rajouri Kadal, Bohri-Kadal, Naidkadal, Kawdara, Nawakadal areas of the downtown remained under the curfew like restrictions clamped by the authorities to prevent escalation in the tension that gripped the areas following the Friday killing. Sources said there was a heavy deployment of CRPF and Police, carrying riot control kit, through the areas and even at some places, they said, troopers were positioned in almost ten meters apart. Due to the restrictions, sources said shops and other business establishments, banks and government offices remained locked while all modes of traffic remained off the roads. Sources told that buses carrying students to various schools in civil lines could to not reach the areas including Lal Bazar, Hawal and the restricted areas and as a result, they said, most of the schools remained off in the civil lines including Rajbagh and Bhagat. Due to the clampdown in downtown, sources said, commuters from Lal Bazar, Nowshera, Hawal, Alamgari Bazaar and other areas had to face difficulties, particularly traffic jam, in reaching their respective destinations. On Friday evening, 161 Bn CRPF allegedly opened fire on stone-pelting protesters at Gojwara, killing the youth Shahid on the spot while another youth Shabir Ahmad Baba of Buchpora was trampled under the one-ton vehicle, leaving him critically wounded. The killing evoked massive protests on the fateful day while authorities clamped unannounced curfew on next day until Monday to prevent escalation in the tension.
