| Atique Khan's dream of forming Govt. in Muzaffarabad depends on Army support | | | Srinagar, July 13 :- Though the Muslim Conference, headed by Sardar Atique Mohd. Khan, was poised to form the Government in Pakistan administered Kashmir, it depends on the establishment in Islamabad, particularly the Army, whether Sardar Khan is able to fulfill his dream of heading the Government which was foiled by the Army in the last election. Out of 29 seats the Muslim Conference has won 20 and it hopes to secure majority support from 12 members elected from the constituencies in Pakistan areas, called the refugee seats. The remaining eight seats, out of the total of 49,are reserved and they are usually filled by those who have the patronage of the establishment in Pakistan. Poll observers in Muzaffarabad said that in the last election Sardar Atique Mohd. Khan's party was on the threshold of forming the Government but on account of his strained relations with the Pakistani Army authorities he could not fulfill his dream. His father, Sardar Abdul Qayoom Khan, has functioned as Prime Minister and President of Pakistan administered Kashmir for many years before he announced retirement from active politics. These observers attach great significance to a recent meeting Sardar Atique Khan had with Pakistan President,Gen. Parvez Musharraf, and Prime Minister, Mr Shoukat Aziz.Though Sardar Atique Khan has denied the charge of his critics that the meeting had been sought for ensuring him the Prime Minister's chair, indications are that the young Sardar had sorted out the differences he had with the Pakistani Army authorities. One thing is definite that if Sardar Atique Khan is able to receive the support of even five members from the refugee seats or from those nominated to the Assembly it will not be easy for the establishment in Islamabad to deny him the right to head the Government. Already Delhi has raised eyebrows over the fairness of the poll and if Islamabad attempted at splitting the Muslim Conference for denying the right to Sardar Atique Khan to form the Government it could expose Pakistani Government and its Army.
