GCW, Bhagwati Nagar celebrates World Environment Day

JAMMU, June 5: The NSS unit "Veerrangana" and Eco-Club "Tawishi" of Government College for Women, Bhagwati Nagar, celebrated World Environment Day 2024 under the patronage of the college Principal, Dr. Meeru Abrol. The celebration included a seminar and a plantation drive, emphasizing the theme "Our Land, Our Future: Land Restoration, Desertification, and Desert Resilience."
The seminar aimed to raise awareness about land degradation and desertification and explore solutions for restoring land and building resilience against these issues. Dr. Mosmi Raina, convener of the Eco Club, presented the welcome address, highlighting the history and significance of World Environment Day.
Fifteen students delivered insightful discussions on land restoration and combating desertification, emphasizing sustainable practices. Ananya Jamwal, a BA Semester IV student, won the first prize. The event was adjudicated by Prof. Anju Bala and Dr. Pavanjit Bali.
Principal Dr. Meeru Abrol emphasized the importance of public awareness and engaging students in environmental activities to foster stewardship. She noted that the day's events educated and empowered students to actively protect the planet.
Dr. Preeti Salathia, NSS PO, proposed the vote of thanks.
A plantation drive was also held on the college premises. The Principal, staff, and volunteers from the Eco Club and NSS Unit planted saplings. Students adopted the saplings to ensure their care, aiming to raise awareness about afforestation's importance and green cover's role in combating desertification and mitigating climate change.
The celebration concluded with participants pledging to continue their efforts towards a sustainable and resilient environment and to extend awareness to their families, society, and neighborhoods.
The program was organized by Dr. Preeti Salathia, NSS PO, and Dr. Mosmi Raina, Convener of the Eco-Club.
