Mufti’s ‘recruitment rally’ shifts to Srinagar
3/12/2009 11:48:09 PM

Early Times report

Srinagar, Mar 12: Continuing with his ambitious recruitment drive, the former Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has now shifted his focus to Kashmir even as at least three former legislators are waiting in Jammu to join the PDP anytime later this month.
Former Member of the Legislative Assembly Sheikh Mohammad Rafi today joined the Peoples Democratic Party. Rafi is an erstwhile National Conference leader who contested the recent assembly elections from Shopian constituency in South Kashmir on Awami National Conference ticket. Shopian is presently represented by Abdul Razaq Wagay of the Peoples Democratic Party.
It may be mentioned here that at least half a dozen former legislators and as many those candidates who contested the recent assembly elections are among five dozen odd well meaning political personalities who joined the Peoples Democratic Party since January this year. Political observers feel that the Muftis are taking the advantage of being in opposition to widen their base ahead of forthcoming Lok Sabha electing.
Two other prominent political activists who joined PDP today were Dr Ali Mohammad who had contested 2008 assembly election from Eidgah, Srinagar and Nazir Ahmed Itoo of Chrar-e-Sharief and Ghulam Hassan Bhat.
Welcoming them in the party fold, PDP Patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed said the post-poll arrival of several political leaders and activists from across the State in the PDP is the wide-ranging public acknowledgment of the fact that a credible leadership and pro-people agenda of PDP has discernibly impacted the State's political landscape. "But the challenging task of securing sustainable peace for our State, dignity for my people and prosperity for our future generations is still unaccomplished," he said and added that the PDP doors are open for all the like-minded individuals, groups and parties who want to become a part of this new movement to safeguard the distinct regional political character of Jammu and Kashmir.
Sayeed said it should not continue to be the State's destiny to lose our young people to guns and bullets. "Kashmir has charted its own course of peaceful resistance and struggle and the aspirations of its people will to be respected by undoing the political and economic injustices with the State,” he said and added an atmosphere has to be created that provides the best knowledge, education, skills and employment opportunities to our youth who have suffered immensely all these years.
Reiterating that Jammu & Kashmir is not a place to be tackled through packages and doles, the PDP Patron said it is to be facilitated and assisted in realizing its potential of natural resources. "We have done it in the past, and I am sure if there is a political will we can do it again," he said and added that PDP accords highest priority to economic rejuvenation of Jammu & Kashmir in proportion to the immense potential it has in the region.
Sayeed said sufficient energy, a technological and industrial base in conformity with the natural resources of the State, increased market access, modern educational facilities and adequate jobs for our youth, will be the major icons of the Jammu & Kashmir envisioned by PDP.
PDP leaders Tariq Hameed Karra, Rafi Ahmad Mir, Advocate Murtaza Khan, Abdul Razak Zwoora ,Ghulam Qadir Pardesi, Ghulam Hassan Geelani, Abdul Hamee Kohsheen, Ghulam Mohi-ud-Din Mir and Mohammad Abbas Wani were also present on the occasion.
Meanwhile PDP has nominated Syed Showkat Gayoor Andrabi of Ratnipora Pulwama as the State Secretary of Party Youth Wing.
