3/13/2009 11:32:11 PM

Early Times Report

Srinagar: Dozens of residents of Palpora, Kreshbal, Tengpora and adjoining areas on Friday staged demonstrations against the Regional transport office and demanded bus service in the areas.

Reports reaching said that dozens of residents of Tengpora,Gund roshan, Bakshipora, Kreshbal , Goripora, Palpora and Guzerbal on Friday appeared at Press colony, Lal Chowk and staged demonstrations against the Regional Transport officer, Tariq Hussain Gani.

The protesters said that the RTO department has banned the movement of the private buses in the areas and has allowed only sumo cab’s to ply in these areas, which charge Rupees 15-20 for each kilometer for every passenger.

“The sumo drivers charge Rupees 15-20 for each kilometer. They have even pressed their private vehicles in the areas where transport facility is not available,” Mohammad Lateef Shah of Guzerbal told .

“We are peasants and can’t afford to send our wards to schools in Sumo vehicles at high fares. The government should allow the bus service in the area for the convenience of the people,” he added.

Bashir Ahmad, resident of Kreshbal said that there seems to be a nexus between the RTO officials and the Sumo drivers and that is the reason private buses are not being allowed to ply in the areas.

He said that the delegation of Tengpora, Gund roshan, Bakshipora, Kreshbal, Goripora, Palpora residents also visited the office of RTO, Kashmir to apprise him about the difficulties faced by the people due to unavailability of the bus service.

“The sumo drivers not only resort to over charging but over loading as well. They accommodate at least 20 people in their vehicles which have a capacity of only ten persons,” Ahmad said.

“The Transport officials get their share from the Sumo drivers. If they can allow Sumo vehicles to ply in the areas, what’s the problem with private buses,” he added.

Ahmad said that more than 50,000 people were suffering due to the lackadaisical approach of the transport officials. He said incase the transport officials fail to solve their problems, the residents will intensify their protests.
