| Maj Gen given 3-yr jail term for smuggling liquor | | | New Delhi, Sep 21 Major General G I Singh, the former commander of a Mountain Division, has been cashiered and sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for three years by an army court that found him guilty of smuggling liquor and misappropriating money. A court of inquiry had earlier established Singh's involvement in "certain illegal activities pertaining to misuse of funds and canteen stores", said an army spokesman. Following this, Singh was tried and sentenced by a general court martial.
The army court's sentence against Singh, the former General Officer Commanding of 6 Mountain Division, is "subject to confirmation" by the army chief.
According to the allegations, four truck-loads of army liquor sent by Singh to Sangrur in Punjab, his hometown, were seized at Dehradun. The army liquor, provided at subsidised prices to soldiers, was to be sold in the open market, sources said.
"The army has sent out a loud and clear message that corruption has no place in the forces," the spokesman said, adding the force will "not shy away from exposing the corrupt within" its ranks.
The force has in recent years cracked down on officers accused of selling liquor and fuel from official stores in the open market.
In December 2004, a brigadier was sentenced to nine months rigorous imprisonment after being found guilty of illicit sale of liquor and fraud. The army had then said it had put in place measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents, including steps to streamline and monitor the drawing of liquor from canteens.
