| Centre gives green signal to troops for intensifying counter insurgency operations | | | Jammu,July 13 :- Following the recent serial blasts in Srinagar and Mumbai the Government of India is said to have given a green signal to security forces, especially the Army,to intensify counter insurgency operations. Official sources said that hitherto the troops, operating in Jammu and Kashmir, had instructions to observe restraint but after the serial blasts fresh direction has gone to the security forces to deal firmly with militants. Alongwith the instructions the security forces have been asked to ensure that no inconvenience was caused to innocent civilians and custodial killings be avoided at any cost. In addition to this: The centre has expressed its willingness to equip the troops and paramilitary forces with sophisticated weapons and gadgets in case such items were required. The field commanders have been asked to submit a list of gadgets and weapons the troops needed for taking on the militants and for foiling infiltration bids on the LOC. Indications are that the members of the village Defence Committees were to be equipped with better weapons after receiving proper training to be conducted by the Army experts.Atleast 150 new VDCs would be constituted in sensitive areas of Doda,Udhampur,Poonch and Rajouri. The state Government and the security forces have been advised by the centre to take in hands measures for preventing militants from targeting members of minority community in order to discourage ethnic cleansing. The centre has now decided not to carry out even phased reduction of troops till the security scenario showed marked improvement. Another instruction issued to the Kashmir Government was that shrines, temples and mosques be placed under heavy security cover so that militants fail to kick up communal trouble in the state by desecrating these places of worship. Vital Government installtions, especially the airports in Jammu and Srinagar besides the railway platforms and track between Udhampur and Pathankot be kept under constant surveillance |
